Malmaison Castle, near Paris, was the favourite place of sejour of Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Josephine.
The stylized palm-leaf is a typical decorative ornament of Napoleonic France. The Emperor had his silversmiths interpret this design specifically as a symbol of 'future military victories', and even travelled with him onto the field of battle.
The central motif of the spatula is composed of a lotus leaf inspired by antiquity. Specially ordered of his silversmiths by Napoleon, this pattern is a fine example of the Empire style.
