The name Palio originated

in Siena, a city in the Italian region of Tuscany, which hosts an annual horse race named Palio with a tradition that dates back 800 years. The Palio in Siena puts a whole city and the entire nation into a state of excitement. Carl Mertens has turned the Palio into a culinary event. The designers who came up with the idea for Palio are Carsten Gollnick and Gert Trauernicht. Its design marries functionality and ergonomics with aesthetics, thereby turning it into a culinary experience. Carl Mertens Palio is cutlery of the highest quality. The consistency found in its design and the precision that is evident in the way it is made elevate this cutlery to a prominent part of any cultivated tableware. The sleekness of its stylish portions punctuate the great effort that has been applied from a production standpoint. The result is a design and surface feel that reflect an unprecedented level of consistency. The reddot award for ""High Design Quality"", which it received back in in 1992 from the NRW Design Centre in Essen, provides evidence of the high regard to which this cutlery is held in the business.

This cutlery is made from

18/10 high-grade steel in Germany. stainless steel is an alloy of steel, chrome and nickel which is used preferentially with quality cutlery. Chrome and nickel provide for the corrosion resistance and the softer shine which can be noticed on closer inspection. The steel of this cutlery includes 18% chrome and 10% nickel and is dishwasher safe and resistant against light acids and waters.

Carl Mertens Palio has knives

with a monobloc. Monobloc knives are made out of one piece of chrome steel free of nickel. With these knives no joint is visible between blade and handle. Carl Mertens Palio in stainless is highly polished. The extraordinary cutlery has only some additional partsand is only deliverable in sets.
